. Leatherworking is a very old Turkish craft. It came to Anatolia from Middle Asia. We know that there were tanneries in Kayseri and Kırsehir in the period of the Seljuks.

In this period, “Ahi Evran” founded an organization called Ahilik. The young were trained theoretically in the evenings and practiced in daytime.
(Ahilik was an organization of tradesman and craftsman and it carried out the same function of Ticaret ve Sanayi Odaları ve Esnaf Birlikleri ( Association of Trade and Manufacturers and Tradesmen ))

There were 350 tanneries in Kazlicesme in Istanbul in the ruling period of Fatih. These tanneries have moved to Tuzla and Corlu at present. There are also tanneries in Usak and Izmir.
